Fighting the Flu

School Turns to SteraMist to Fight the Flu

OVERVIEW:
Mold, bacteria, and viruses can wreak havoc throughout schools. With many challenges from both internal and external sources, it can be difficult to stop the spread of these microorganisms. With flu outbreaks, the spread of mold, and larger concerns, school districts are turning to more effective solutions for disinfection treatments.

The Ballston Spa Central School District turned to Zott Construction, the TOMI Service Network (TSN™) provider in their area. As a TSN™ provider, Zott Construction utilizes SteraMist ionized Hydrogen Peroxide (iHP) technology as a tool for remediation as well as assisting their community with outbreaks, such as the flu. The versatility of SteraMist meant that Zott Construction was able to disinfect areas such as school buses, nurse offices, and gyms for the flu, mold, and other contaminants.

SCOPE OF WORK:

80 buses (Various Sizes), 6 Nurse Offices, Gymnasiums

LABOR:

2 SteraMist technicians, 8 hours per technician, Total of 16 hours

SOLUTION USED:

4 Gallons of SteraMist BIT Solution

MEETING THE NEED:

To meet time constraints, Zott Construction deployed their SteraMist Surface Unit, an EPA-registered disinfection system and solution combination; portable and easy to use to achieve high efficacy with direct point-and-spray application. Two certified SteraMist technicians were able to disinfect high-touch areas for the flu and other viruses on all buses, including all buttons and electronics due to its superior material compatibility. While the buses were uniform, the challenge of going from school to school put a strain on time. However, the Surface Unit’s ease of use and portability allowed the two technicians to effectively finish the job quickly. SteraMist was also used to fight the flu and other viruses and bacteria on surfaces such as beds, chairs, and tables throughout the nurse’s offices. Disinfection of the gymnasiums was also paramount, as gyms are often capable of hosting dangerous pathogens, such as MRSA. SteraMist was used on various mats, weights, and other athletic equipment. Overall, the treatment took 16 hours to disinfect schools throughout the Ballston Spa Central School District.

THE RESULT:

Zott Construction armed with SteraMist, was able to meet the needs of the Ballston Spa School District, providing a clean atmosphere for students and staff. With broad-spectrum application, all areas were able to get disinfection treatment both quickly and efficiently.

“Following our meeting, we surveyed the campus to identify high-risk areas that would provide the most health benefit for the investment made in treatment. Our intention was to apply an active intervention to minimize the spread of illness throughout the flu season. The SteraMist product did not leave behind any post-application residue, nor any order complaints. We expanded the scope of treatments for the second application.” Leading District Coordinator of Facilities and Security, Ballston Spa Central School District.
