Reduce HAIs With Superior Disinfection

Dangerous HAIs that are common in healthcare facilities

Hospitals are typically seen as a place of recovery and safety, there are often dangerous pathogens and contagions that can present a threat to all patients. C. difficile (CDI) spores can be easily transferred by touch and can remain in the environment for 5 months, allowing the pathogen to spread over a wide area and infect numerous people (Paxton 2017). On average, there are roughly 500 thousand C. difficile infections per year that stem from hospitalized patients, of which ~15,000 deaths are directly attributed to the infection (Paxton 2017).

Disinfection to reduce HAIs

SteraMist is proven to drastically reduce the presence of C. difficile in healthcare facilities as SteraMist is on EPA List K for C. difficile sporicidal. By being on EPA for List K, SteraMist is also capable of disinfecting C. auris, which is another common healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Essentially, the use of SteraMist in healthcare rooms can reduce the presence of C. difficile and C. auris to create a protected environment for compromised staff and patients. In fact, the paper, “Use of Novel Approaches to Reduce Clostridium Difficile in an Inner-City Hospital”, discovered that, in combination with active isolation and antibiotic interventions, “[iHP]… has greatly reduced [her tested] hospital’s C. difficile burden” (Paxton 2017).  It was also claimed that since using “SteraMist after every discharge”, the ICU has lowered its incidences of C. difficile significantly (Paxton 2017).

Healthcare facilities use a variety of cleaning techniques to meet their requirements. Ensuring the best method is used is important to the safety of patients, personnel, and the facility. The most common and outdated method used for disinfection is manual cleaning. Manual cleaning requires time and labor as well as relying on the personnel that is conducting the cleaning to ensure coverage of the area.

“SteraMist is safe for all surfaces including computers, soft furnishings, HVAC, and duct systems… There is no exposure to patients or healthcare workers once the cleaning is finished.” St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Ensure you have the right disinfectant

In the last few years, many hospitals implemented ultraviolet light (UV) for disinfection, however, UV misses anything in the shadows where pathogens may hide. SteraMist offers higher efficacy while reaching even the tightest of spaces to ensure pathogens do not linger. Halosil, a hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant, is also used in the healthcare setting but has an ingredient, silver, that is dangerous to be left behind as it corrodes and poses threats to human health. SteraMist’s iHP disinfection technology enables industry-leading disinfection that does not require any wiping or rinsing, while also having none of the downsides other major disinfection competitors possess.

As demonstrated, SteraMist can be an integral part of the hospital and healthcare industry moving forward and provide both patients and staff peace of mind and protection.  Therefore, whether hospitals and other medical facilities are interested in easy-to-use disinfection, high efficacy kills against pathogens, or a disinfectant that has extremely high material compatibility, they should consider SteraMist technology.
